MonaLisa Touch Q & A

What is MonaLisa Touch therapy?

The MonaLisa Touch® system is the clinic’s exclusive choice for vaginal laser therapy. It's a revolutionary, clinically proven technology that’s painless and minimally invasive.  It stimulates the production of collagen, the most abundant protein in your body, to help restore balance and stimulate healing.

The MonaLisa Touch laser therapy provides quick and effective relief for a variety of conditions related to menopause and estrogen deficiency, including vaginal dryness, irritation and mild urinary incontinence.

The procedure effectively treats symptoms that arise from reduced estrogen levels, including:

  • Vulvovaginal atrophy (vaginal dryness and pain)

  • Vaginal itching

  • Dysuria (painful urination)

  • Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)

It has also shown benefit for treating other gynecologic conditions, including urinary incontinence and lichen sclerosis, when women experience itchy, thin white skin patches on their vulvar skin.

MonaLisa Touch has been approved by Health Canada as a new medical treatment for the Genitourinary syndrome of menopause.  However, it is not covered by governmental provincial health plans.  If you have a private health services plan or extended health insurance please check with your provider to see if this treatment is covered.  If not, we have partnered with Medicard to offer patient financing options.  Please see the Resources-Financing section for more information.

What are the benefits of MonaLisa Touch?

From thickening your mucosa (vaginal wall tissue) to reducing pain during sexual intercourse, there are a lot of real benefits to MonaLisa Touch vaginal laser therapy:

  • No surgery or anesthesia required

  • Safe and essentially painless

  • Fast procedure with little or no recovery needed

  • Stimulates lubrication

  • Diminishes vaginal pain and itching

  • Lowers infection rate

  • Promotes tissue elasticity

How does MonaLisa Touch work?

Dr. Tomas and Dr. O’Toole use high-intensity light beams that stimulate collagen, promote elastin growth and boost vascularization (the formation of new blood vessels).

In five minutes or less, your pH and hydration levels improve, your tissue becomes stronger, more toned and elastic, which helps prevent infections and pain during intercourse.

What does MonaLisa Touch feel like?

MonaLisa Touch vaginal laser therapy is painless for most women. You may feel slight discomfort with insertion of the laser probe.  Drs. O’Toole and Tomas will place a cooling, numbing gel at the entrance of the vagina to minimize this discomfort.

Side effects, like vaginal discharge or minor bleeding, are possible, but usually last only two or three days. It’s a good idea to abstain from sexual activity during this short recovery period.

How many MonaLisa Touch treatments do I need?

Depending on your level of estrogen deficiency and symptoms from genitourinary syndrome of menopause, Dr. O’Toole and Dr. Tomas usually recommend MonaLisa Touch treatments initially 3 times at 6 week intervals, before reducing the frequency to just once a year.
